Interesting Dog Facts: Kids in Families with Dogs Get Sick Less Often
People often worry that they can get sick from their dog. But many people don’t realize that dogs can help kids get sick less often! Finnish researchers studied about 400 families, and found that babies growing up with dogs in the home got colds less often, didn’t need antibiotics as often and had fewer ear infections.
In fact, kids with dogs were sick almost 10% less often! The authors believed that families with dogs spend more time outside. In addition, the dirt and bacteria brought into the home by dogs may provide some protection. Other studies have found that early exposure to animals can cut the risk of allergic disorders in addition to colds and ear infections.
Michael, co-author of the dog picture book, “Bash and Lucy Fetch Confidence,” says this is just one more reason people should have a dog. Just look at how healthy Michael’s sister, Ally, looks in this photo! “Dogs lick you and love you and help you stay healthy,” he says.
In Michael’s book, Lucy, a Golden Retriever, provides other benefits to kids. She has lots to teach a boys’ soccer team–if only Coach will let her! In fact, the book talks about how having a dog around can build kids’ confidence in sports–and life. Learn more about the book by visiting the home page.
