Fun Puppy Facts for Kids: Puppies Lose Their Teeth!

Michael’s puppy, Hudson, who is five months old, has been losing his teeth. Just yesterday we found the tooth pictured here in his mouth! We regularly check to see what he’s chewing on (especially if we know it isn’t food), and in this case, he was chewing on the tooth that had just fallen out.

How do you know if your puppy is losing teeth? First, you can expect it when puppies are Hudson’s age. Be on the lookout for bleeding in puppies’ mouths. We find blood on the balls we throw to Hudson. We also see his mouth bleeding, which is scary at first!

The spaces that once held the lost puppy teeth will soon be filled by adult dog teeth–in the same way that kids’ teeth are replaced by adult teeth (although kids’ usually start losing their teeth when they’re four to six years old).

During this “teething” period, puppies have a strong urge to chew. It’s a good idea to have a lot of chews on hand–or they’ll start chewing on things, like carpets, bikes, toys, and furniture. We order our dog chews on amazon.com, where they’re less expensive than they are in stores. We also make sure that Hudson gets lots of exercise. If he’s tired, he’s less likely to chew on our furniture. In fact, we wore out Hudson this morning throwing balls with him and as we’re writing this, he is snoring away at our feet!
